Paul Pelosi, the husband of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has been “violently assaulted” by an assailant who broke into his San Francisco home early Friday. Pelosi, 82, has been hospitalized after the attack and is expected to make a full recovery, his spokeswoman Drew Hammill said in a statement.
Nancy Pelosi was not in town at the time, but instead was in Washington, protected by her escort. The aggressor, whose identity has not been revealed, has been arrested and the motivation for the attack, which occurs in the final stretch of the campaign for the legislative elections on November 8, is being investigated. According to the US media, citing anonymous police sources, the aggressor asked when entering the house: “Where is Nancy?”, which would support the thesis of political motivation.
Nancy Pelosi, 82, is a candidate for a California district in the elections on November 8. She is the current speaker or president of the House of Representatives, a position she has held since 2019 and which she already held between 2007 and 2011. She is expected to leave it after the elections, in which the polls indicate that the Republicans will take control of the Lower House congressional. Pelosi’s house was the target of an attack in January 2021, days before the assault on the Capitol, in which graffiti was made outside. The assailants also left behind a pig’s head.
Pelosi, the second in the line of presidential succession after the vice president, Kamala Harris, is one of the personalities of the Democratic Party most hated by the staunch supporters of Donald Trump, and a frequent target of his attacks on social networks. She held her position in the session of January 6, 2021 in which insurgents stormed the Capitol. The parliamentary commission that investigates these events, and that has recently summoned Trump to testify, revealed videos a few weeks ago that showed how the assault was experienced from within, with Nancy Pelosi as the main protagonist. Threats to congressmen have skyrocketed since Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 elections, according to USCP data.
The authorities have subsequently indicated that the attacker attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer at the house in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. The police received a notice at 2:27 a.m. on Friday, local time, at 11:27 a.m., Spanish peninsular time. “The President and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill said in the statement.
The United States Capitol Police (USCP) has announced in another statement that it is collaborating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the San Francisco Police in a joint investigation into the event. Special agents from the California office of the USCP quickly arrived at the scene. The USCP has sent a team of investigators from its threat assessment section.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre issued a statement saying: “The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for the entire family of President Pelosi. This morning he called President Pelosi to express her support after this horrific attack. He, too, is glad that a full recovery is expected. The President continues to condemn all violence and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”
Paul Pelosi owns Financial Leasing Services, a financial and real estate investment and consulting firm. He was also the owner of the Sacramento Mountain Lions football team. He has been married to Nancy Pelosi for 59 years, with whom he has had five children. He made headlines last May after being arrested following a drunk driving accident in Napa County, where he owns a vineyard. He was sentenced in August to five days in jail, although the time he was detained was enough. After pleading guilty, he was fined $680,000 and also admitted to undergoing an eight-hour court-ordered rehabilitation program. In addition, he is on probation for three years, under judicial supervision.
Paul Pelosi’s investments have been subject to criticism and scrutiny for frequently materializing in sectors that were being regulated by Congress. The Speaker of the House of Representatives has always closed ranks with her husband.
