Just on the day of the reading of the final verdict in his trial against Amber Heard, Johnny Depp entered a pub in Gateshead, England. The actor did not appear in court for the reading of the sentence, although Heard did. Depp sued the ‘Aquaman’ actress for an opinion piece published in The Washington Post in 2018 in which he denounced the abuse he would have suffered from a man. Although the actor was not explicitly mentioned, his legal team argued that there was evidence that the references to him were clear and that this would have caused irreparable damage to Depp’s career, for which he claimed the sum of 50 million dollars. Heard reacted with a counterclaim, also for defamation, claiming nothing more and nothing less than 100 million dollars from her ex-husband’s lawyer.
The final sentence, delivered on June 1, ruled that both actors suffered defamation, although Depp has been the clear winner of the contest. Heard must pay the actor $15 million, which becomes approximately 10.4 million due to state laws. The actor’s team, for his part, must pay his ex-wife 2 million dollars.
Shortly after the verdicts were read in the Court of Fairfax, Virginia, Depp was seen at The Bridge tavern in Gateshead, England, taking some photos with fans of the place and having drinks with musicians Sam Fender and Jeff Beck. The actor has joined Beck on his UK tour and has already appeared Giving concerts with the singer at the Royal Albert Hall, located in South Kensington, London.

It’s a statement, the actor has declared that he feels “truly grateful” towards the jury, which has “returned to life”. “Six years ago, my life, that of my children, that of my relatives and also that of the people who have supported me and believed in me for many years, changed forever”established the actor. “All in the blink of an eye.”

“False, very serious and criminal accusations were launched against me through the media”continues the statement “which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, even though no charges were ever filed against me”. This refers to the consequences he would have suffered from the media because of Heard’s words. “Telling the truth was something I owed to my children and to everyone who has stood firm in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing that I have finally achieved it”.
The actor not only thanks the jury and his legal team as well as all the people who have been on his side. “I am, and have been, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from everyone. I hope that my fight to reveal the truth has helped others, men or women, who have found themselves in my situation, and that those who support them never give up.”
“I hope that the position returns to that of innocent until proven guilty, both in court and in the media”adds Depp, who concludes his message with a “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has begun.” Finally, the actor signs his statement with the phrase “Veritas numquam perit. The truth never perishes.”
The other side of the coin
On the other hand, Heard also published a statement after the sentence. In her, the actress claimed to be “shattered” after hearing the verdict. “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I am devastated that the mountain of evidence has still not been enough to stand up to the disproportionate power and influence of my ex-husband.”
Nevertheless, Heard claims to feel “more disappointed by what this verdict means for other women”. “It pushes back the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously”adds the actress. “I’m sad that I lost this case. But it makes me even sadder that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American: to speak freely and openly.”
